Material Detail: SUS303 Stainless Steel
General Description:
SUS303 is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel known for its excellent machinability and corrosion resistance. It is a modification of SUS304 that incorporates the addition of sulfur or selenium, enhancing cutting and threading performance.
Chemical Composition (Typical %):
Chromium (Cr): 17.0 – 19.0%
Nickel (Ni): 8.0 – 10.0%
Manganese (Mn): ≤ 2.0%
Silicon (Si): ≤ 1.0%
Carbon (C): ≤ 0.15%
Sulfur (S): 0.15 – 0.35% (for machinability)
Iron (Fe): Balance
Mechanical Properties (Annealed Condition):
Tensile Strength: ~ 620 MPa (90 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2%): ~ 240 MPa (35 ksi)
Elongation: ~ 40%
Hardness: ~ 160–190 HB (Brinell)
Key Characteristics:
Corrosion Resistance: Comparable to SUS304 under mild environments; less resistant in chloride-rich or acidic environments due to sulfur addition.
Machinability: Excellent — specifically developed for improved cutting, drilling, and threading.
Magnetic Properties: Non-magnetic in annealed condition; may become slightly magnetic after cold working.
Heat Resistance: Up to ~ 870 °C (1600 °F) in continuous service.
Applications:
Precision mechanical components
Fasteners and threaded parts
Shafts, couplings, and fittings
Firearm accessories (muzzle brakes, mounts, compensators) where machinability and corrosion resistance are important
Limitations:
Slightly reduced toughness and corrosion resistance compared to SUS304 or 316 due to sulfur content
Not recommended for highly corrosive or marine environments
