A fixed barrel spacer in a Nielsen device (booster) is used to convert a suppressor designed for tilt-barrel (Browning-type) pistols to work with a fixed-barrel firearm (such as a pistol-caliber carbine or a blowback-operated pistol).
Purpose of a Fixed Barrel Spacer:
- Disables the Nielsen Device: The Nielsen device (or booster) is designed to help semi-automatic pistols with tilting barrels cycle properly by temporarily decoupling the suppressor’s weight. A fixed barrel spacer locks the piston in place, preventing movement.
- Prevents Damage: If a Nielsen device is used on a fixed-barrel firearm, the suppressor can experience unnecessary movement, potentially causing misalignment and baffle strikes.
- Increases Durability: Since there’s no need for reciprocation, locking the suppressor in place reduces wear and tear on internal components.
- Improves Accuracy & Consistency: A fixed mount provides a more stable platform, leading to improved accuracy compared to a moving piston system.
When to Use a Fixed Barrel Spacer?
- On firearms with a fixed barrel, such as:
- Pistol-caliber carbines (PCCs)
- Direct blowback pistols (e.g., Makarov, some Berettas)
- Bolt-action or manually operated firearms
If you’re using a suppressor on a typical Browning-style tilting-barrel pistol, you should NOT use a fixed barrel spacer, as it will prevent proper cycling.
